An island with great nightlife | Mykonos, Greece

An island that parties all night and grooves to the tunes of who’s who in the DJ world. An island of hot sunshine and lashing winds. An island with picturesque cobblestone alleys and intimate boutiques. Mykonos had it all where we made a day stop as part of our island hopping adventure in Greece. We arrived quite early on the island on a very short outbound flight from Santorini.

People party wild on this island and mornings therefore can be blissfully deserted. There were very few cabs at the airport and we had to wait a while before we could hop into one. We wanted to rent out a motorbike. But sadly, found out that the airport offers only car rentals. Little Venice constituted the opening scene in our short  Mykonos episode. Its an array of house along the sea’s edge with their balconies overhanging on the water. These were on the far end of the island where it gets miserably windy and chilly especially in the mornings. The intense winds make Mykonos a hot spot for windsurfing.  We braved the winds and took a stroll around without getting blown away. Nearby were the iconic wind mills and were exactly how we pictured them. They were no longer operational though.

We rented out a motorbike in Chora, the main town and set off on our  beach odyssey

The roads in many parts of the island are narrow and not particularly car friendly. We strongly suggest renting out a motorbike or quad to explore the island and get to those remote beaches. We drove down to Paraga beach. The beach was beautiful with  blue azure water and soft sand. Through the clear waters we could see everything from the coral to all the little fishies. We followed a path along the left end of the beach that led us to a secluded spot with sweeping views.

Driving further brought us to the Paradise beach. It is rarely quiet here and beach parties are on anytime during the day. Its favored by the young crowds who swarm the beach bars in huge numbers. The ambience is bubbling and super ecstatic. Its a place to be if you love loud music and dance. The place turns even wilder as the evening draws closer.

Leaving the Paradise beach and to our next beach further south on the island, we lost our way and realized the phone was dead too. We stopped at the closest store, to throw in some life into the phone. It happened to be a  bakery, Koutsokos that served a lot of baked goodies unique to greece. They were even selling ice cream by kilos. Exactly what we needed in the hot sun. Back on road we conquered a few more hilly roads to get to Elia beach. This beach, on the southern part of the island was spectacularly colored. Lots of water sports to indulge in and even more umbrellas to relax.

We came back to Chora and walked through the narrow streets painted blue and white, treasuring  the Cycladic architecture. The town boasts many boutique stores selling beautiful handmade jewellery,  colorful gems, leather sandals. Walking in the postcard perfect streets made us forget that people actually live in these areas.

The tropicana beach was our base for the evening. It has a dance club overlooking the beach. The sun was going down the horizon and as the sky was getting painted in hues of red and orange the club was embellishing in neon and blue. The music progressively changed from mellow to blasting loud. People started flowing in adorning their best beach jams and party sandals to groove along. The party went further crazier as it got darker. The dancing moved on from the sandy beach floor onto the tables. It was turning into a wild full moon party. We just chilled out amongst the good vibes  in the fully decked-out club.

In Mykonos any place in the town or the beach has no shortage of partying happening, truly Cancun of Europe. But, Cavo Paradiso, Paradise club and Tropicana are the top dance clubs that just can’t be missed. Mykonos is a true party island with glamorous prices on everything from hotel room  to food and anything in between. One has to be prepared to flash big bucks to thoroughly experience the island.
